Chinese Shopper Report 2017

Chinese are the fourth most travelled nationality, with over 65 million flight passengers in 2016, an increase of 17% on the previous year, higher than any other in the top 30 list of travelling nationalities.

CiR has launched its newest study into the Chinese Traveller and Shopper in Duty Free, one of a series of reports that examines Duty Free shopping behaviour amongst key nationalities travelling worldwide.

CiR’s forecasting data predicts that Chinese international flight passengers will have increased by 38% to 90 million by 2025, indicating that Chinese shoppers will continue to be a key market within the travel retail channel in future. It is therefore crucial to understand the value of the Chinese shopper to the travel retail channel and how to encourage future purchasing.

CiR conducted in-depth research online with over 1,400 recent Chinese travellers living in or near 80 key Tier 1, 2 and 3 cities across 29 regions in order to identify differences in shopping and travel behaviour between Tier 1 city residents and the emerging middle classes in Tier 2 and 3 cities.

As well as overall Duty Free attitudes and behaviour, the report includes detailed analysis and comment that covers the Alcohol, Beauty, Confectionery, Tobacco, Fashion & Accessories, and Watches & Jewellery categories, providing a fresh perspective on this hugely important traveller group.

To understand and respond to Chinese shoppers’ changing behaviours in Duty and Tax Free retail, this report is essential reading. At £7,500 (GBP) / €10,320 this extensive study is great value for money.
